Meditation is appreciated today as a practice to calm the mind to cultivate peace, wellness and stability, and its benefits have been scientifically proven and documented. But it is first and foremost an ancient practice of deep devotion in which prayer is used to focus the mind and enter into the deep stillness in which we commune with God.
In the September 22 Adult Formation class, I will lead discussion on what meditation is and describe its benefits. We will experience a short guided practice, and discuss how to establish a personal practice. This class meets at 9:15 am in McCracken Hall.
Then for six weeks — Mondays from September 23 to October 28 — I am teaching a Monday Meditations series at 5 pm in the church or on the labyrinth. Each hour-long class will include a guided meditation and can be attended on its own, without attendance at other sessions.
Guided meditations will introduce meditation techniques including witnessing the mind, mantra japa, meditation on the breath, pranic healing visualization, tratak, and walking meditation.
Key topics include the ethical foundation of yoga, asana and pranayama (movement and breathing) in relation to meditation, overcoming obstacles and meditation and daily life.
Please join us Sunday morning and on Meditation Mondays.
