October

October 5 Sally James: Mary and Jesus at Orvieto: More than (First) Meets the Eye
Sally James, Professor Emerita of Art History at Mary Baldwin, offers a taste of her new book, The Cult of the Virgin in Medieval Italy: Art, Liturgy and Devotion at Orvieto (Cambridge University Press, 2025), by taking us virtually to Orvieto, Italy to see murals of the life of the Virgin Mary, completed in 1380, by little-known but brilliant local artist Ugolino di Prete Ilario. Ugolino is a master storyteller who gives fresh characterizations of Mary, the child Jesus, and her customarily marginalized husband Joseph. He also includes hidden agendas tied to the city’s history and religious feasts. Although Ugolino is little-known today, you will see why he was considered the lead painter in central Italy in the poet-plague generation.
October 12 Between the Collars: Monthly-or-so conversations with our clergy – bring your tough questions about theology, liturgy, faith, scripture and more, and join the conversation!
October 19 What is DIOSWVA? A look at our diocese and the ongoing bishop search.
