SACRA: Staunton Augusta Church Relief Association
Established in 1983, SACRA provides a central location for the dispensing of social ministry funds from local congregations to those needing emergency aid. Ecumenical in nature, SACRA is supported by a wide range of faiths and groups.
Help is provided directly for people’s needs on a first come, first serve basis. Meaning if someone comes in needing assistance with an electric bill SACRA write a check to the electric company for that person. Average financial help given is $200 that may be done once is a 6 month time period. SACRA’s mission is to assist with emergency needs, not ongoing payments.
All staff are volunteers and work with a $750 guideline for each day that can be increased as funds are available. This is supplemented with gifts from area churches who have agreed to be contacted for specific needs.
Food is purchased from the Blue Ridge Food Band and is given according to their guidelines. Food help is given more often and reaches a large number of people.
Administrative costs average around less than 2% for things such as the phone system, stamps, etc. This low amount is directly attributable to the generous help of St. Francis Catholic Church in providing space for the office and food storage plus utilities at no charge.
In addition to individual donations, approximately 80 organizations, most of them local churches, provide funding to SACRA.
At Trinity Church, the fourth Sunday of each month is SACRA Sunday, and a special collection is taken to support SACRA. Contributions to Trinity that are designated to “SACRA” are tax deductible donations. You may mail contributions, made out to Trinity Episcopal Church and designated to SACRA, to PO BOX 208, Staunton VA 24401. If you want to learn more about SACRA or how you can help, contact Margaret Pearson, Parish Administrator, 886-9132.
